The Griffith Rutherford Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is pleased to announce the winners of the Southeast Division (7 southeastern states) and National levels of judging of the 2016-2017 Junior American Citizens Contest (JAC). This is an annual contest sponsored by the Griffith Rutherford Chapter to promote citizenship and patriotism. The National contest's theme for the 2016-2017 school year was "Our National Parks: 100 Years of Service to America". The Griffith Rutherford Chapter sponsors the JAC Contest for grades 3rd through 8th grades in public, private, charter, and home school situations. The students in 3rd through 5th grades could choose to compete in one or more contest areas which included designing a stamp, drawing a poster, writing original poetry, writing a short story, producing a banner, submitting a photo essay, or conducting and writing about a community service project completed in 2016. Those students in 6th, 7th, and 8th could compete in one or more categories, which included writing poetry, writing a short story, submitting a photo essay or conducting and writing about a community service project. The local part of this annual contest begins in August and ends in November, with the national part of the contest results available in late April or May.

This year the JAC Contest received 693 entries completed by the same number of students from elementary and middle school situations. The Griffith Rutherford Chapter sent the following first place entries on to the State DAR level of judging where they all won first place again: in Stamp Design/third grade: Tristan Deviney, Pinnacle Elementary, Stamp Design/fourth grade: Brallan Maya-Rocha, Forest City Dunbar Elementary, Stamp Design/fifth grade: Paisleigh Falk, Ellenboro Elementary; Poster/third grade: Caleb Hamrick, Sunshine Elementary; Poem/third grade: Nathen Longardner, Pinnacle Elementary, Poem/fifth grade: Cody Hardin, Pinnacle Elementary, Poem/eighth grade: Ashley Luckadoo, R-S Middle; Short Story/fifth grade: Emma Clayton, Rutherfordton Elementary, Short Story/seventh grade: Emma Lane, Lake Lure Classical Academy, Short Story/eighth grade: Bailey Gregory, Lake Lure Classical Academy.

From the Southeast Division JAC judging, we are pleased to announce that two of our first place winners did receive first place ratings for their entries. The Stamp Design entry of Tristan Deviney, a third grader at Pinnacle Elementary, and the Short Story entry of Bailey Gregory, an eighth grader at Lake Lure Classical Academy were sent on for National JAC Contest judging in March.

In addition, The Griffith Rutherford Chapter would like to announce the results of the National Junior American Citizens contest recently made available to us. Certificates and awards of the National JAC judging have been awarded to our two national winners, Tristan Deviney, who won a National JAC first place certificate and medal for his Stamp Design, and Bailey Gregory who won a National JAC honorable mention certificate for her Short Story.

The Griffith Rutherford Chapter JAC Co-chairmen Betty S. Taylor and Janet D. Jolly would like to thank all the many participants in this year's JAC contest and for their wonderful entries.
