“Because He Lives . . . I Ride!” New Attitude,  New Motorcycle Ministry

When we think of motorcycles, the images portrayed in such movies as “Easy Rider”, “Hell’s Angels” and “Wild Angels” offer nothing compared to the new faith based riders. It’s a refreshing and new definition given to bikers!

Locally at Campfield Memorial Baptist Church in Ellenboro, the Carolina Faith Riders are growing and doing not only great things for the community but are projecting a two wheel biker ministry throughout the community. The new attitude is “Because He Lives . . .I Ride!” This motorcycle ministry on Saturday, August 27, held its’ third annual faith riders bike day.

The biker ministry began just over three years ago when it was formed by Mike Gettys. Mike, with the help and encouragement of Pastor Scott at Campfield Memorial Baptist Church in Ellenboro, began the program. He started with just 10 members. Mike said: “I had a dream to do something through our church for the motorcycle community.”

The Campfield Memorial Baptist Church motorcycle outreach soon became a member of the Carolina Faith Riders whose slogan is: “It’s not what you ride . . .  but who you serve.” The ministry is redefining what a biker is all about. Mike Gettys says they now have over 50 members and are growing.

This years free event featured a great BBQ luncheon, the 3:16 band on stage, door prizes, a early run to One on One Care in Shelby, bike games and testimonials. Three testimonial tents were set up where anyone could give testimony. It brought together the community and everyone and anyone was invited. This ministry is about conversion and planting seeds. There is never any pressure. It is all about example. It is a two wheel outreach ministry for Christ which also features the “blessings of the bikes” in the spring and bike night at Sonic once a week.

When Mike Gettys began to establish the organization, he said he was “scared to death”. Now he is pleased and strongly feels that the hand of God is definitely having its’ way. The ministry is also offering a positive effect on church members. Those who had a different attitude about bikers and never have been on a bike have been surprised and changed their attitude. The members of Campfield Memorial Baptist Church are now very enthusiastic, proud, and supportive of their bikers ministry.

The dream of Mike Gettys is that a biker church will be developed out of the present program. That would be a first for Rutherford County. With the continuing growth and belief in this program, it’s bound to happen.
