John Wayne “J.W.” Barnes, 73, of Mooresboro, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 29, 2013.

A native of Cleveland County, he was born on November 14, 1939, a son of the Gilbert Barnes of Rutherfordton and the late Ezma Jolley Barnes. He retired from Duke Energy after 35 years of service and was a member of Prospect Baptist Church.

Pop, as he was known by his family and many others, loved NASCAR Racing, sharing his beach house with his family, and traveling with his wife of 49 years, Teeny Barnes. These great loves he passed on to his son, Dennis Barnes and wife Tammy of Rutherfordton and his two grandsons, Jordan and Judson, who were his pride and treasures in life. He was so happy when spending time with his grandsons and his god-daughter, Stephanie, who Pop considered one of his own. He enjoyed life, laughter, and just having fun; he took this life with a lighter view, because he knew that the best was still to come, in Heaven with his Eternal Life. We will always remember all of these things he taught us as we know that we will one day join Pop for our Eternal Life in Heaven.

In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by his wife, Denise Lynn Barnes. He is survived by his wife, Ernestine Pearson “Teeny” Barnes; one son, Dennis Barnes and wife Tammy of Rutherfordton; one sister, Betty Norville and husband Vance of Mooresboro; two grandsons, Jordan and Judson Barnes, both of Rutherfordton. A memorial service was held at Main Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Brewer and Rev. Roger Gosnell officiating.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, PO Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.

McKinney-Landreth & Carroll Funeral and Cremation Service is serving the Barnes family.
