The hopes of an undefeated season for Chase softball and East Rutherford baseball is no longer possible.

Both clubs had their streaks snapped last Thursday as East fell 9-4 to T.C. Roberson and Chase softball was stunned by Patton, 7-4.

The win streak in Cavalier country stops at 31 games as East Rutherford baseball is now 14-1. Roberson has always fielded solid baseball teams throughout the years. And the loss wasn’t such a huge surprise, the Rams has beaten the Cavs in the previous two Easter baseball finals at McNair Field.

The softball lost at home for Chase was a little more shocking. Chase, who sported a record of 11-0 before the game with Patton, gets off to dismal start and never recovers.

As they say, anything can happen in sports and it certainly did last week.

Call it whatever you want, but Patton softball has thickened the 3A playoff race in the SMAC. Patton, who had just two wins on April 8th, beat all three opponents last week, including East Rutherford too.

Right now, R-S Central softball is two games ahead in the SMAC standings for that final 3A playoff spot. Patton has four SMAC games left, including one against Central.

By the way, the Hilltoppers not only hold a playoff spot in softball, but in baseball and girls soccer at the moment as well.

Over at Thomas Jefferson, the Gryphons baseball team continues to hold on to a playoff spot. Should they keep a #2 or #3 seed from the 1A side of the Western Highlands, they will get to host a playoff game. And the girls soccer team at TJCA is still doing well at 10-1-3 on the year to date.

Also, a quick congrats to East Rutherford’s Brad Levine for winning ncpreps 2A coach of the year honors. Congrats to Carlos Watkins of Chase and East Rutherford’s Devince Boykins, who made the ncpreps 2A all-state basketball team.

Switching gears, Sunday was all about Talladega and the 2-car draft. Listen, I think that the end was fantastic with four abreast at the line, but I am still not completely happy with the two-car draft scenario.

Then again, maybe NASCAR sees that the drag issue amongst the cars is doing the job. From a safety perspective, there were a number of three-five car incidents, so I guess it did keep the entertainment value up.

For those who didn’t see it, Jimmie Johnson won by two-thousands of a second over Clint Bowyer, Sunday. It tied for the closest finish in NASCAR history since electronic timing and scoring has been used in the sport. Now that Johnson has won a race in 2011, that might not be such a good thing for the rest of the competition.

Oh and don’t forget about next week’s Easter baseball tournament presented by East Rutherford at McNair Field.

It’s always a great tournament as East Rutherford, Chase, R-S Central, Watauga, South Caldwell, Alexander Central, Hickory Ridge and Team Carolina round out the eight -team field. The event goes on from April 25-28.
