The Griffith Rutherford Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is pleased to announce the winners of the North Carolina State Junior American Citizens Contest (JAC). This is an annual contest sponsored by the Griffith Rutherford Chapter NSDAR to promote citizenship and patriotism. The National contest's theme for the 2016-2017 school year was "Our National Parks: 100 Years of Service to America". Six hundred ninety-three entries were submitted this year from that same number of students in 3rd through 8th grade, from public, private, and charter schools in Rutherford County. The types of categories for entry submission included individual and group entries. The individual entries included designing a stamp, drawing a poster, writing a poem, writing a short story, and producing a photo essay. While conducting and producing a report on a community service entry could be both an individual or group entry, producing a banner required at least groups of three to five students.

This year, of the 693 entries we received some 585 were wonderful stamp designs of many of our country's national parks. Through our two levels of judging, the Griffith Rutherford Chapter awarded 10 entrants first place and each received a certificate, blue ribbon, and a gold one dollar coin, symbolic of Rutherford County's historical event of minting the first one dollar gold coin. Those same first place winners were sent on for judging at the North Carolina State Daughters of the American Revolution (NCSDAR) Level of the JAC contest. Again, this year each one of our Chapter winners won first place at the State level.

The ten State JAC winning entries have been sent on for further judging at the Southeast Division level of judging. They will be judged against entries from seven Southeastern states. All first place winners at that level will be sent on for judging at the National level of the NSDAR Junior American Citizens Contest. Results of these two higher levels of judging will be available in May.
