A Little Sports Chat By The Numbers

I thought I would change it up this week, so let’s go by the numbers. Shall we?

12) East Rutherford softball rides a 12-game winning streak. They has beaten the likes of R-S Central, Kings Mountain, Crest and East Burke, which all have records above .500 at the moment. The Lady Cavs have solid speed in the lineup and they are also getting enough run support averaging 8.5 runs per game during this streak.

5) Thanks to R-S Central’s #5 Makayla Crawford, R-S Central softball has won four of its last five games. Crawford came up big last week with a three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning against Draughn. The home run actually hit off the top of the flag pole in center field to end the game and that’s something I may never see again. Well, Crawford isn’t doing it all by herself, but she has come to aid when needed as of late.

3) Chase’s Erika Dover leads the home run category in the county on the softball field with three out of the parkers.

1) The one and only team to have beaten Burns in SMAC baseball this season is East Rutherford. East sits 1.5 games out of first and needed to beat Burns this week to really even have a shot of capturing the crown. However, they were tripped up earlier by R-S Central and they have to face them again May 6.

4) Kevin Harvick became the first person to enter victory lane twice this season in the Nextel Cup Series. Changing his car number to four is really paying off. The number hasn’t seen victory lane twice in one year since 1996. Harvick has always been a championship contender, but faded towards the end every season. I have a feeling he maybe the one to watch late this season.

47) Shelby North Carolina native, Billy Standridge passed away last week after a battle with cancer. The former NASCAR driver of the #47 was suppose to be honored at Darlington this past weekend since his health was failing. He ran 84 Cup races and had a career best of twelfth in 1988. God bless his family and friends as they deal with his passing.

7) Aldon Smith should be fired within seven days if not before that in the NFL. His career should be over. Making a fake bomb threat in an airport is something to never take lightly, especially in this day and age. This is the third time he has been arrested in less than three years. I am sure he will get suspended by the NFL, but somehow his career will likely not be over.

2) Bubba Watson has won The Masters twice in the last three years. Just eight players have done that in such a short stint during the history of the tourney. He maybe the only person that earns 1.62 million dollars in one day and then has his victory dinner at The Waffle House as reported Monday. Now that’s a regular guy, I am liking it.

8 and 9) Jordan Spieth seemed in control of winning golf’s most treasured tourney until a horrible hole eight and nine of the final round, Sunday. Things went array in with a three-shot lead as the 20-year-old nearly made history by becoming the youngest to ever win The Masters. The good news is that I believe he has a long and bright future in the PGA.

2014) A lot was made about not having Tiger Woods at Augusta National. I have to agree. It wasn’t the same tournament without him in 2014. I guess he felt he didn’t really have a chance to challenge and decided to get back surgery instead and that makes sense.
