Alvin Lee Newton, age 92

Alvin Lee Newton, age 92, a resident of the Sunshine Community, passed away Monday, December 28, 2015.

Alvin was born June 14, 1923 in Cleveland County and was a son of the late Robert E. Newton and Elva Wall Newton. He was a graduate of Casar High School and a longtime member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church where he had served as both a Deacon, and church treasurer. Alvin was instrumental in helping build and establish the Sunshine Community Club House. He worked for many years at Thomas & Howard Wholesale where he retired as manager. A brother, Velustus Newton, and sisters, Affie Hudson and Mattie Martin preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-seven years, Ruth Toney Newton, a daughter, Jan Hill and husband Alan of Sunshine, a grandson, Cory Hill and Ashley of Sunshine, three brothers, Lemuel Newton of Ellenboro, R. E. Newton of Union Mills and William Briscoe Newton of Polkville.

A graveside service was held in the Mt. Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Eugene Passmore officiating.
