The Rutherford County Toy Run will be held Sunday, Nov. 20, beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot behind Denny's in Spindale.

The annual event, which was hosted by the Rutherford County Moose Lodge, will continue despite the dissolution of the chapter earlier this year, said David Payne, who was a member.

"The former members, in conjunction with the Cleveland County Independent Bikers, have decided to carry on the tradition and continue to help local children," Payne said.

The event has grown from around seven children the first year to more than 100 being helped in recent years. The need in the community, he added, is still great.

"This event is one of the biggest contributors to providing for families at Christmas," Payne said. "We get the names of families from various resources here in the county and then contact them to find out their children's information."

While the event is called a toy run - and bikers bring toys with them to it - Payne said needed items are provided for children.

"We want to make sure they have shirts, pants, shoes, socks and winter coats," he said. "We raise a good bit of money during the event, and take that and purchase the items."

The items collected are separated by family and each member. Once sorted, Payne explained, items are given to the family to give to their children as they normally would.

"We try to remain anonymous," he said. "We want children to experience Christmas as their family wants."

The number of motorcyclists has grown as well. The past few years, Payne said, there have been as many as 250 motorcycles and 400 riders.

The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. with kickstands up at 1:30. The run will go through portions of each of the tri-cities and will end at the National Guard Armory where food and door prizes will be available for participants.

There is no admission to the run other than a new, unwrapped toy or a monetary donation.

"People are welcome to show up and ride," Payne said.
