Four years ago, Big Springs Baptist performed a play called “Uncle Phils Diner”. It was so well received it added other performances. The play was combined with a dinner and it immediately became the best entertainment bargain in Rutherford County. The same play was performed two years in a row. Now the same thing has evolved with a second year of the play “Smoke On The Mountain”. The play is combined with a barbecue dinner. Dinner will follow the 2pm performance and dinner will begin at 5pm for the 7pm performance. Both performances will take place on Saturday, May 3rd at Big Springs Baptist Church in the Hollis Community in Ellenboro. There is no doubt that for just $15 a ticket you will experience a most entertaining time and enjoy a great meal. What a bargain! Seating begins 30 minutes prior to each performance. The play is the project of Big Springs Baptist Church Brotherhood Project.

“Smoke On The Mountain” is a musical comedy. The name comes from Psalm 104:32: “He who looks at the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountain, and they smoke”. Since it’s inception, the play is now one of the most produced shows worldwide. An interesting fact is that the songs in the production are mostly old hymns. The setting is in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina Baptist Church in 1938 and revolves around the Sanders family. The story is all about a Saturday night Gospel Sing at a old country church in North Carolina’s Smokey Mountains.

The Sanders family, a traveling singing and performing group, offers two dozen bluegrass songs. The young Pastor Oglethorpe of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church has asked the Sanders Family to help bring his small congregation “into the modern world”. In between songs each member of the Sanders Family bears witness relating stories about a big event in their lives. To inspire the congregation, each tries to appear perfect, but alas, one thing after another goes astray and contributes to hilarious performances. Yes, the conclusion of their failed attempts has a big plus factor in that the Sanders Family endears themselves to everyone by revealing their human failings while sharing their life’s triumphs.

Once again, the performers at Big Spring Baptist Church outdo themselves. Their efforts reveal a hilarious time as well as an inspirational message. This dinner theatre is so good they should share it with other churches and organizations in the county and “take it on the road.”

Yes, it’s that worthwhile and good. Congratulations! Now, go break a leg!
