The Isothermal Alumni Association proudly announced the winner of the 2018 Outstanding Alumnus Award yesterday at the curriculum Graduation Ceremonies. Congratulations to Barbara Davis Callahan, winner of the 2018 Outstanding Alumnus Award.

Barbara graduated from Isothermal Community College in 1982 with an Associate's Degree in Business Administration. She continued her education at Gardner Webb University through the GOAL (Greater Opportunities for Adult Learners) program because of a partnership between Isothermal and Gardner Webb University, graduating with honors, because of her excellent start at Isothermal. She now works for Isothermal as the Secretary for the College and Career Readiness Department. Recently, Barbara earned a certificate of completion for the new Hospitality and Tourism program, demonstrating her commitment to lifelong learning. She also demonstrated her commitment to Isothermal and to developing her leadership skills by earning a Certificate of Participation for the college-sponsored leadership series in 2016-2017.

As a student, Barbara made a positive impact on Isothermal Community College as a Student Government Association senator, a cheerleader for the men's basketball team, and as an active member of the Future Secretary Association. Barbara also gives back to her community as an active member of a Relay for Life team, a volunteer at Yokefellow, and a donor to a foster children's program. As an active member of Spencer Baptist Church, she regularly participates in church mission projects. She has volunteered for the Tryon International Equestrian Center and plans to take part in the World Equestrian Games this fall as a volunteer. She encourages others to join her in a community wellness program and walking group.

Barbara's professional activities are also impactful, both on Isothermal students and her colleagues. As secretary for the College and Career Readiness department, Barbara is a daily listening ear for potential adult high school students. She patiently explains the enrollment process and makes potential students feel welcome and safe as they embark on a major endeavor in their lives. For current students, Barbara is a cheerleader and encourager, celebrating with them as each class is completed. With a smiling face she makes sure students know there is more than one person excited about their individual success. She joyfully points students to faculty members who can help them continue their educational journey. She attends Student of the Semester Awards programs to support both current and former students. She also purchases and keeps snacks on hand for students who might have an occasional food need during the school day. For faculty and staff in the College and Career Readiness Department, Barbara provides quarterly treats to celebrate staff birthdays and holiday treats to show appreciation to staff members' dedication to the program.

Barbara works tirelessly to proclaim the benefits and offerings of Isothermal Community College. She is a true Isothermal champion in word, deed, and action.
