Rutherfordton is set to light the tallest cedar Christmas Tree in Western North Carolina Saturday, December 2, at their annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on the lawn of the Courthouse. Following a parade of marching bands, decorated floats, horses, dance troops and their guest of honor, Santa Claus, the 7:00pm lighting of the tree caps off a day of Christmas celebrations traditional to the town. As published on their website, www.rutherfordtown.com, "The holidays are special in any hometown, but we happen to think that our Christmas season holds just a little something more. Our downtown decorations enhance our community's charm and with our fabulous shopping and wonderful restaurants, it's no wonder so many people come back to Rutherfordton to celebrate the season."

Listing a few of their favorite things, organizers encourage everyone to come out and enjoy talking to Mr. and Mrs. Claus in Main Street Park at 1:00pm, live music and carolers, painted holiday windows up and down Main Street, seeing some historic figures from years past, hot chocolate and other seasonal treats. "Our merchants put on live window displays including music, elves and sometimes puppies!"

For those of you that don't like waiting until the last minute to do your holiday shopping, the Christmas Market will give you a perfect opportunity to shop for truly unique gifts. A stroll up and down Main Street will thrill the children as they enjoy the interactive live windows that include Santa's Elves in their workshop as well as our painted window displays full of holiday cheer, and our Annual Snowman Decorating Contest is sure to put everyone in the holiday spirit.

With marching bands and festive floats; wide-eyed tots and Christmas carols - there's no better place to jump start your holidays than right here in Rutherfordton. It will be a full day of fun for the whole family.
