Colby, 7 years old, enjoys daily visits from his 3 year old sister, Cora, and aggravating his nurses.

"People are what's important in this world." says Nancy Hughes, event organizer. "It's our goal to love and serve the people of our community. When we heard that Colby's leukemia had returned, we immediately wanted to do something to help. We knew others would want to help as well. We've done something similar in the past for another family with great success, so we're very hopeful that this event will raise a lot of money for the Whiteside family." explains Nancy on why she and her husband, Perry, have organized this fund raiser for young cancer patient, Colby Whiteside.

The event, Cartwheels 4 Colby, will take place on Saturday, November 11, and is designed to help relieve the financial burden the family is experiencing as Colby is undergoing treatment. IGA Kids, located at 340 Industrial Park Road in Rutherfordton, will open their hearts and doors, from 10am until 2pm for a day of 'fun and activities', providing the opportunity for other loving hearts to help as well.

"We will be having a huge raffle," says Nancy. "Families from our gym are selling raffle tickets. People can also purchase Play Passes for $10, which can be redeemed for an hour of supervised free time in our facility. We have a 40 foot trampoline, air track, Jr. ninja course, bars, balance beams, a foam pit and lots other fun mats and shapes to play on. From 12 noon-1pm, we will have a Cartwheel-A-Thon. Kids from our gym have gotten sponsors to donate money for each cartwheel they can perform in a 10 minute period. 100% of proceeds will be donated to the Whiteside family."

Colby Whiteside was first diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on August 12, 2015. He started chemotherapy two days later, and after a long battle, won his fight against cancer. However, on October 1st, 2017, the family heard the dreaded news that the cancer had returned. Colby is currently at Mission Children's Hospital in Asheville with his parents, Steven and Jessi, and his little sister, Cora, by his side.

Colby and his family live in the Greenhill community. He is a 2nd grader at Rutherfordton Elementary School and attends West Point Baptist Church. He recently underwent a bone marrow biopsy and is facing another round of chemotherapy. If deemed necessary by his medical team, Colby will undergo a bone marrow transplant procedure at Duke University which would mean the family would reside in Durham for at least 100 days.

For those of you who may not be able to come out to the fund raiser, donations in the form of cash or check can be dropped off or mailed to IGA Kids, 340 Industrial Park Rd., Rutherfordton, NC 28139. Please make the checks payable to Jessi Whiteside.
