Cavs and Gryphons still undefeated

East Rutherford

The Cavs did what they needed to do last week as they went to Patton and won. However, they didn't make it easy on themselves due to penalties and turnovers. Still, they ended up pulling away in the second half for a 34-7 win.

I don't know exactly what it is, but Rutherford County has always had problems winning at Patton in Football. Nonetheless, East Rutherford goes into the bye week at 5-0.

East picks back up on the 28th when they face Polk in Columbus.

Cherryville (3-1) at Thomas Jefferson (4-0)

Thomas Jefferson easily won last week 49-18 over Calhoun Falls Charter. Up 35-0 after the first quarter, TJCA cruised behind 120 yards rushing by Donavan Berry.

While all TJCA players saw action last week, they have maybe the toughest opponent that they have faced all season upcoming.

It's unusual for Cherryville to be 3-1 at this point of the season, but they are. The Gryphons will host the Ironmen this Friday and will be the only team in town.

Cherryville has their own "big three" in Dylan Harden (QB), Chapel Moss (RB) and Cryuff Fleurine (WR)

This should be a nail-biter as Thomas Jefferson finds a way, but it won't be easy. Thomas Jefferson 26-20.

R-S Central (1-4) at Mitchell (4-1)

Last Thursday was the C.J. Hannon show with five touchdown runs, but it was not enough. Central lost 50-32 on the road to South Caldwell last week. It was the Hilltoppers best outing offensively all year, but they couldn't stop the Spartans from scoring.

It seemed like every time South Caldwell turned the ball over, it turned into more of a punt with Central starting deep in their own territory. Hannon had 100 yards rushing, but five touchdowns was a high school career personal record for the junior.

The Hilltoppers will hit the road again as they go to Bakersville. Mitchell is up next and they beat Central last year 41-7. Mitchell was very stout last year, but not the same team of a year ago. Still, Mitchell is good enough. 34-14.

Chase (1-4) at Brevard (4-1)

The Trojans had a bye week, but now visit Brevard this coming Friday. Mitchell Johnson is averaging 130 yards throwing per game and running back Anthony Fields leads a conglomerate of runners in Brevard's ground game. They average nearly 200 yards on the ground per game.

Chase will have to make Brevard honor the run game before they can take shots down the field. Kiylan Miller and Garrett Hampton are capable receivers no question. On a hunch I will take...Brevard 28-22.

NASCAR

Brad Keselowski won his third straight race and goes for four in a row when the Cup Series heads to Richmond this Saturday night. Martin Truex Jr. led the most laps in May, but didn't win. This weekend, Truex gets the first short track win of his Monster Energy Cup career.
