Things weren’t looking so good for the East Rutherford baseball team on Monday night. It was the game decider, in a best-of-three Western Region 2A championship series.

Losing 6-0 in the second frame to East Lincoln, the Cavaliers persevered with experience and clutch power hitting. Brock Helton set off the fireworks for East Rutherford, hitting the game winner in the bottom of the seventh with a 3-run homer to take a 9-7 victory. Derek Deaton smashed a three-run shot and Blake Myers clobbered a solo-homer earlier to account for all three round-trippers in the contest.

East Rutherford (27-4) slammed five home runs in an 11-4 win in game one, but East Lincoln won 8-4 in game two, setting up game three’s dramatics.

The Cavs will head to Raleigh’s Doak Field and play for 2A title number six in a three game series against Randleman (26-3) this weekend. Game one is slated for a 5 p.m. first pitch on Friday. Game two will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday and the final contest (if needed) will be played Saturday at 5 p.m.

Rutherford County’s Post 423 Legion baseball team began the season last week. They have now won two in a row following victories Monday and Tuesday. Last Wednesday, Post 423 opened up with Hendersonville as Dylan Hipp led the way with two hits. Errors, wild pitches and passed balls were too much to overcome in a 9-5 home loss though. They lost Friday at Taylorsville and then Jared Allen’s three hits on Saturday were not enough in a 14-10 loss at Burke County.

On Monday, the tide began to turn as Rutherford County (2-3) won by mercy rule, 11-1 over Asheville and then they walloped Shelby 9-3 on Monday night.

Tuesday, Hipp (single, double) led the team from the plate with 3RBI’s. Teammates Dakota Whitaker and Ben Morris picked up 2RBI’s each in Tuesday’s win.

On the high school gridiron, there will be a new man in charge of Thomas Jefferson’s football team. Assistant coach, Jim Sosebee will take over as the new head coach for Tony Helton. Helton, who wants to enjoy watching his son, Anthony play football this upcoming season decided to step aside from his duties for football, but still remains the dean of students and athletic director at TJCA.

And for the motorsports enthusiasts, Sunday surely was a treat.

After a wicked restart with two-laps to go in NASCAR’s longest race of the season, Kasey Kahne ran out of gas. It piled up the rest of the field and then fan-favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. inherited the lead.

Earnhardt Jr. had victory in his sights for a second time this year, only to be snubbed by running out of gas in the final turn at the Coca-Cola 600. Kevin Harvick, who passed him with three laps to go to take the win at Martinsville earlier this year, sped by Junior’s outside to win on Sunday at Charlotte as well.

Despite taking a gamble on gas, at least people should feel good about Junior competing for wins now. NASCAR certainly is happy about that.

All I can say to Indy car rookie J.R. Hildebrand is patience kid, patience! Hildebrand has a mere four second lead on Dan Wheldon heading into the final corner of the 2011 Indy 500, but tried to pass a slow car entering the turn.

Unbelievably, Hildebrand (23-years old) crashed hard into the outside wall, leaving Wheldon to catch up and beat him by just a few car lengths for the win.

Sadly is that the Hildebrand could have shown a little bit of patience by just following at that moment instead of making one of the biggest mistakes ever to be made in motorsports history.

The irony of the Memorial weekend classics -both Junior and Hildebrand were sponsored by the National Guard.
