The Trojans have never won a team sport title, but Saturday they tried to change all that. Chase has won individual titles in wrestling, swimming and track. The Chase Men's soccer team came dang near close as they fell in Raleigh 4-0 to First Flight in the 2A state title bout.

Chase soccer (22-1, 15-1) won the West by downing Eastern Randolph (5-0), Forest Hills (7-1) Shelby (1-0) Franklin (4-2) and finally Lake Norman Charter (1-0).

Congrats on a second straight conference title and now a trip to the state title game!!! Three seniors primarily pushed the Trojans way with Miguel Jimenez (7 goals, 11 assists), Preston Walker (69 goals, 17 assists) and Bryan Perez (60 goals saved).

Underclassmen Luis Vasquez (14 goals, 29 assists) and Georday Randlett (16 goals, 11 assists) also proved to be big time key players.

The Chase defense may have been the biggest key as they gave up just 15 goals all year and corralled 16 shutouts.

In the Trojans defense, First Flight (21-0-2, 10-0) had lost three straight title matches until finally winning the 2A crown on Saturday. It was just their time!

Congrats to Chase coach Greg Deshommes and his kids for a spectacular season on the soccer field.

On the football field, it was R-S Central, who came up with a mild upset in the 2AA playoffs and extended Coach Mike Cheek's coaching days as a Hilltopper for one more week.

The Hilltoppers as a 7-seed upset the 2-seed of Wilkes Central 31-6 on the road last Friday. R-S Central (6-6) ran for over 300 yards and held Wilkes Central (9-3) and it's better player Justin Parsons to less than 110 yards overall on the ground. The Hilltoppers running game were led by the trio of Tyler Simmons, Austin Dorsey, and Tyrese Tate.

R-S Central will face Hunter Huss in Gastonia on Friday in the second round. Hunter Huss (9-3) is very athletic and pretty good on special teams play. Huss also likes to ran the football and have a trio of backs in Jaquavious Butler, Xaiver Holmes and Dallas Danner.

Meanwhile, Thomas Jefferson's football teams had no problem in their first round contest...after halftime. They broke a 27-all tie and pulled away 54-27 against Bishop McGuinness last Friday.

Coach Cash and his charges pitched a second half shutout on defense and Nomi McMullens rushed for four touchdowns on the evening.

The 3-seeded Gryphons will have to face 2-seed Mountain Island Charter (9-3) in Mt. Holly this Friday. They two teams already played once this season as Thomas Jefferson fell 31-13, but MIC had to forfeit the win later. Thomas Jefferson (10-2) will have to chase MIC quarterback Aapri Washington, who already has 1100-plus yards rushing for 14 touchdowns.

The Gryphons have played much better defensively down the stretch, but MIC has speed and that could be a problem again.

NASCAR: It's a Jimmie Johnson world and we are just living in it. I can't explain it. The luckiness, the fact that he is just that good at critical times. Jimmie Johnson ran in the top ten all day and still was the worst running of all four championship contenders.

Carl Edwards had undoubtedly the best car on Sunday, but a slow restart with 10 laps to go allowed championship contender, Joey Logano to try and pounce on first place.

The two tangled and crashed as a result. Logano kept going and nearly captured the title with fresh tires on a last ditch pit stop.

However, it was Jimmie Johnson, who nabbed the lead with two laps left and drove off to his seventh Sprint Cup Title. It ties Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt as the only other two in NASCAR history to have seven championships in the sport's top series.

Rick Hendrick, Chad Knaus and Jimmie Johnson. They all know how to create a team, to make it work together and win. When everything is on the line, they know pressure and they know how to get it done. Johnson is in a category that is top notch when it comes to the racing and sports world in general. Johnson's legacy may still be questioned when he decides to hang up his helmet. If your out there Greg Wright, I heard you yelling as the checkered flag flew Sunday. I never thought I would see another 7-time champ evolve at the top level of NASCAR. Johnson was the exception.
