The South Mountain Athletic Conference maybe the most competitive in league history this year, it’s in softball where there is no room for error.

East Rutherford (11-1, 5-1) got the best of Chase (7-1, 5-1) last week on the softball field with a 5-2 triumph. It’s the first loss for a very solid Chase softball team this season. Jaclyn Boever notched the win for East, as she has been phenomenal on the mound this season.

With a 6-1 victory over Burns last week, R-S Central (5-6, 5-1) maintains pace for a three way tie at the top of the conference heap. It was Kaley Homstrom 2-RBI single that plated enough Lady Hilltoppers for the win.

This week, East Rutherford, Chase and R-S Central are playing at the East Rutherford’s Easter Baseball Tourney at McNair Field.

East Rutherford has been in the championship game during the first three times, but lost in all three trips against T.C. Roberson. Chase beat East a year ago in the same tourney to keep them from earning a win in their own tourney again.

After East Rutherford thumped Chase, 15-1 this past week, it looks like they could be on a warpath to do what East does best--build a winning streak and keep opponents off-balanced. They also got past Central for the second time this season 6-3 at home. Ofcourse having pitching from Brock Helton and Ridge Beheler doesn’t hurt that case.

Chase (7-5-1) and R-S Central are hoping to make their first appearance into the Easter tourney championship game this season and be the first Rutherford County team to win it as well.

Don’t write off Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy baseball either as they have won four straight, sitting at 8-4 overall, 5-3 in Western Highland play. The Gryphons came up with a huge victory as they won the rematch with Mitchell 5-1, last Friday.

I usually don’t say too much about golf, but The Masters is one of those championships you can hardly miss, especially the final round. Everybody has been talking about Bubba Watson, who won in a sudden death playoff.

Typically, after landing in surrounding trees and brush, a golfer just wants to get out of that spot by getting the ball back in the fairway. For Watson, it was an opportunity of a lifetime--no guts, no glory. While Watson could have played it safe, he aimed for the green instead. Three bounces and a nice roll later towards the cup and Watson has a good look at an attainable putt. He would putt out and become the champion of golf’s most prestigious green jacket. Although gutsy, Watson chose his instincts and went for the gamble, but he didn’t come out broke. There is no way that same shot could have been perfectly executed again, instead it was one of those meant to be moments in sports.

On the NASCAR scene, maybe it’s too early to talk about points, but Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits second in the standings. Look down the list Michael Waltrip Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. is sixth and teammate Clint Bowyer is ninth. They maybe the nicest early season surprise of them all.

I know that we are only six races in, but Jeff Gordon lags behind in 21st and 90 points back of the leaders. However, he lost 16 points during Martinsville’s overtime period for which he was leading beforehand. Therefore, Gordon would be in 16th and 74 markers back had he won the event. That’s just a few things to think about as they head to Texas this weekend.
