A cold night became the scene for a seemingly one sided game. However, in the second quarter, the Cavaliers became a hot team and almost took the county football championship game away from the dominant Chase Trojans. The Cavaliers finally scored but could not make the extra point and the score was 21-6. Chase was held off at the 4 yard line, but made a field goal to post the score, 24-6. Soon after East Rutherford’s T.J. Watkins scored again and after another missed field goal, the score became 24-12. It was getting late and the Cavaliers were warming up and about to put the Trojans in a sweat.
Once, again Cavalier power house, T. J. Watkins came through. He took a kick off from Chase, with just 2 minutes and 36 seconds left, down the field for a touchdown to make the score 24-18. The Cavaliers decided to attempt a two point conversion and succeeded. All of a sudden the scoreboard read 24-20. The Chase crowd and cheerleaders who had already been celebrating became quiet. Their cheering turned to praying. It all started with 31.5 seconds left in the game. The Cavaliers had the ball and #7, Quarterback Maddox Stamey completed a pass with 28. 6 seconds left. With only 18 seconds left, he again succeeded and the ball was on the 25 yard line of Chase. When the ball went in play and with only 8.7 seconds left, a Stamey pass, which would have changed the score to 24-27, was incomplete. The Chase Trojans win! They become the Rutherford County Champions!
Whoever your favorite team, the very cold night of this past Saturday became a game that went from “boring” to an “oh-my-gosh squeak”. Regardless, this was a great football game. First year Chase Football Coach Daniel Bailey, his staff and his team are to be congratulated for their win. His Trojans came through when the going went tough.
To all Rutherford County football teams - every member of your 2011 football team, needs to be very proud. You gave us a memorable football game and as the saying goes “Wait until next year!”.
