Chimney Rock’s solar-powered Music on the Mountain 2013 concert series will feature Grits & Soul and headliners The Swayback Sisters at noon-3pm Sunday, August 11 in the Park’s Meadows. The concerts will be powered by the sun with Solar Powered Sound. The Sept. 14 concert at noon-3pm will feature Johnson’s Crossroad and Joe Hallock & the Flat Creek Stringband. Park guests can enjoy the family-friendly concert in the Park, included with day admission, which is $12 for adults and $6 for youth (ages 5-15).
The Swayback Sisters are an all-female, close harmony trio from Asheville known for their old-school country soul, Appalachian-style folk ballads and dirty acoustic blues. Melding the talents of Laura Blackley, Cary Fridley and Mary Ellen Davis, the band draws heavily on music that came before them. They pay loving homage to musicians like Memphis Minnie, Ola Belle Reed and Bessie Smith while bridging to the present and beyond.
At the very heart of Grits & Soul is the songwriting collaboration of Southern song crafters, Anna Kline and John Looney. Their sound is a fusion of down-to-earth Americana steeped in lonesome mountain bluegrass and drenched in Memphis soul. Onstage and off, Anna and John share a dynamic musical chemistry that grips your soul through their heartfelt original songs and intricate harmonies. Audiences can’t help but clap and sing along.
Sept. 14 Musicians. Johnson’s Crossroad blends blues, roots-rock, folk, bluegrass and Appalachian Old Time. Joe Hallock & the Flat Creek Stringband explores old time Appalachian music while drawing on flavors of Celtic, Caribbean and American cultures through acoustic instrumentation, rich vocal harmonies and a sense of adventure, fun and audience collaboration.
Events will be held rain or shine, but in case of rain, the concert will be moved to the covered pavilion on the Meadows, where parking is available. Limited bench seating is provided at the concert venue, but attendees are encouraged to bring camping chairs or blankets. No beer and alcohol are allowed inside the state park, and no coolers will be allowed inside the concert area. Avery’s Hot Dogs will offer organic grass-fed 100% beef hot dogs, tofu veggie dogs, Nathan’s hot dogs, chips and drinks at the pavilion.
