Christmas Version Of Year And Review

It’s hard to believe that another year has went by. What a year it was from the athletics standpoint in 2014 from Rutherford County?

No doubt, the story of the year comes from the ladies at East Rutherford. The Lady Cavs snagged the school’s first softball title. Savannah Davis was outstanding all year from the mound and at the plate. She returns again this upcoming season. As a matter of fact, most of the club returns to try and repeat the feat.

If you take a look at football, senior-laden Thomas Jefferson grabs your attention. The Gryphons picked up 10 wins and nearly went to the regional finals, falling to Alleghany in the third round. They had never won a football playoff game in school history until this season. Thomas Jefferson is now 24-14 with Coach Jerry Cash at the helm in just three years.

Let’s go back to the ladies for just a minute and talk about Rachel Camp. The East Rutherford grad had a sensational year in 2014 among high school athletes. Camp dumped 28.4 points per game last season on opponents named first team all-state and led the Lady Cavs to the fourth round of the playoffs in Greensboro. She also became the new scoring leader in the county, pouring in over 3,000 for her high school career. Camp is now at Virginia Tech and making quick strides.

She just became the ACC Rookie of the Week by going off for an average of 31 points and 11.5 rebounds in two games. She leads all ACC freshmen in scoring with 18.1 points per game and ranks fifth overall in the league.

Despite losing the county championship to East Rutherford, R-S Central’s football team also makes the list. The Hilltoppers who rebounded from persistent injury woes upset Kings Mountain, overcame Burns and then won a first round playoff game at Bandys. Matt Atchley’s catch and run to the one-yard line at the end set up the playoff win in the waning seconds. R-S Central hung with eventual 2AA state champion East Lincoln in round two, but fell 49-28 on the road.

Lastly, R-S Central baseball makes the top five. Hendersonville was undefeated going into the postseason and given a number one seed. R-S Central was 10-13, gladly finding a wildcard spot in the 2A West. However, Connor Dailey pitched a magnificent game and landed the Hilltoppers a 2-1 upset in Henderson County back in May.

R-S Central will go to Freedom during the Christmas break starting on December 27. The boys will see Avery in the first round (5:30pm) and the girls will take on a very tough Porter Ridge club (10am). The boys could end up playing last year’s 3A champion, Freedom, who still is talented this season.

East Rutherford boys will go to Cherokee on 12/26 and 12/27. The girls will be at Landrum from the Dec. 26-29. East girls will take on

Both ladies and gentleman’s hoops teams from Chase will travel to Cherryville for the Christmas Tourney in Gaston County next week. Thomas Jefferson will not play again until January 6 at Bessemer City.

Merry Christmas to all and to all...a good 2015!
