Lisa Burleson (right), Operations Manager of Hardin’s Drug presents a $1,000.00 check to Jill W. Miracle, Executive Director Rutherford Regional Health Foundation in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Rutherford Regional Health Foundation raises money for three key Cancer programs offered through the Cancer Resource Center at Rutherford Regional Health System.

The Mammogram program is designed for women who are between the ages of 40 to 49 years old, are medically uninsured and meet financial guidelines. The program provides screening mammograms for uninsured women who do not otherwise qualify for assistance from federally-funded programs such as the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program. The Mammogram Program is funded through our Foundation’s “Women Together” event, other fundraising partnerships with businesses and civic groups. The Foundation also receives donations from individuals and organizations on a monthly or annual basis.

Cancer Patient Navigation provides registered nurses who provide individualized support and guidance to cancer patients from the time of diagnosis through survivorship. The service is available to those who have breast, colon, lung and gynecological cancers.

Patient navigators provide emotional and clinical support to those who are facing cancer.  The nurse navigator goes with patients to doctor’s appointments and helps them understand the information they are given about their care, and they provide key information and coordination as the patient makes treatment decisions.  Navigators can also help connect patients with other resources that might be needed during treatment and recovery.

The third cancer program that is funded through the Foundation is the Cancer Resource Fund. Often, during the course of treatment and recovery from cancer, patients face financial hardship due to missed work, insurance co-payments or expensive medications.  Our Cancer Resource Fund can help alleviate a financial crisis with assistance for housing, food or transportation costs during a qualified patient’s treatment process.

The purpose of Breast Cancer Awareness events is to not only raise funds to provide for patient care for residents of Rutherford County, but also bring awareness of the cancer resources available through Rutherford Regional Health System.

“Promotions like these, initiated by Corporate Honor Roll members, make a big impact on our $100,000 goal for Rutherford Regional Health System Cancer programs,” said Jill Miracle, executive director of Rutherford Regional Health Foundation. “We appreciate businesses who become involved in helping us serve patients right here in our community.”
