The Rutherford Regional Auxiliary is a great group of volunteers who help in just about every department at the hospital. However, most people don’t know how involved they are in supporting patients. Recently, the Rutherford Regional Health System (RRHS) Auxiliary voted to purchase wigs for cancer patients in Rutherford County. The wigs are available at the RRHS Cancer Resource Center for patients who are experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatment.

“Rutherford Regional Volunteers provide the priceless contribution of time, talents, comfort and compassion on a daily basis. It truly is amazing to provide joy to a patient who has been faced with a challenging diagnosis. In this particular case, the Auxiliary was honored with the opportunity to provide beautiful wigs,” said Suzanne Holtzclaw, Director of Volunteer Services at Rutherford Regional.

Jamie Ingraham, RRHS Cancer Outreach Manager, added, “Hair loss is a common side effect of chemotherapy and sometimes of radiation therapy. Considering all the life changes patients experience with a cancer diagnosis, it’s wonderful to be able to offer a woman an up-to-date wig that makes them feel and look good. We are most grateful for the very thoughtful support of the RRHS Auxiliary members.”

Bobbie Bridges, who volunteers at the Cancer Resource Center and serves as the Vice President of the Auxiliary, noticed the emotional lift the perfect wig can provide for a woman when she was assisting a patient at the Cancer Resource Center. “At that moment it occurred to me that ensuring wigs are available for cancer patients in our community is something the Auxiliary could make happen.” Bobbie presented the idea to the Auxiliary and ongoing financial support for wigs at the Cancer Resource Center was approved.

The Cancer Resource Center is located at 2270 US HWY 74A in Forest City. For more information please call 828.245.4596.
