In 2005, 2007 and 2012 the Carolinas were invaded by the British and World Champion Smithills School Senior Brass Band from Bolton, England. In the process they won the hearts of thousands of people, of all ages, in North and South Carolina. On all of those tours they performed amazing concerts before packed houses. Rutherford County will be privileged to have them return for the third time to perform a free concert at R-S Central High School auditorium on Tuesday, July 22, 2014.

The 7:00 PM concert will be free and open to the public, but donations will be accepted to help the band with tour expenses. Local school bands, music groups and lovers of brass music are especially invited to hear this world-class, 45-member brass band play the music that has brought them 4 World Championships, 12 British National Championships, the French Open Brass Band Championship and 6-time winner of the BBC Brass Band of the Year Award. Their July 22 performance will be hosted by First United Methodist Church in Rutherfordton. Band members and staff will stay two nights in the homes of Rutherford County residents. Rutherfordton will be the sixth stop on a 10-day, 8-concert tour that will include other concerts in Raleigh, Kernersville, High Point, Winston-Salem, Thomasville and Gastonia. A different concert program will be played each evening.

The 45-member band is comprised of British youth ages 12 through 18 from a regular comprehensive (public) school in Bolton, England. Bolton is an old textile town. In fact, that is where the industrial revolution in textiles began. The band members are ordinary kids from unremarkable backgrounds who have been shaped by a remarkable director into extraordinary musicians, who have played before royalty and world audiences to great acclaim. Put them on your calendar for July 22 and do not miss this great musical event.
