County Championship Round Two: Blue Against Red

The battle of Blue against Red is again upon us. It’s a very spooky match up considering that is on Halloween.

R-S Central will travel across county to East Rutherford as the two rivals vie for a shot at the county championship. If Central wins, they will win the title. East would have to beat Central this weekend and then Chase the following week to get the title back.

Questions that remain: One team has to be more than one-dimensional? Both teams are run first offenses, but I do believe somebody will have to challenge the other down the field a little bit just to keep the other off balanced.

Defensively, R-S Central has held up well in that department this season. East has fared better than a season ago and are much more physical than a year ago.

R-S Central seems to make a play when they need too as they season has progressed, we will see if that continues. East Rutherford likely has the speed, size and athleticism advantage, but East fades as the game goes along this season.

R-S Central (6-3, 4-2) outran East Burke last week for a 49-28 victory. Central rushed for 317 yards and Matt Atchley picked off three of the four East Burke interceptions. East Rutherford (4-5, 2-4) fell 39-0 to an elite Crest team last week. As for East and Central, I’m totally confused. It really just depends on which two teams shows up.

R-S Central likely sowed up a playoff spot with a win last week, East Rutherford will need to win at least one if not both games to make a case for the postseason.

Chase on the other hand suffered a 54-13 loss at the hands of an angry Kings Mountain last week. Following the Mountaineers loss to the Hilltoppers from the week before, the Trojans could not have scheduled Kings Mountain at a worse time this season. The Trojans have a better shot as they go to East Burke on Halloween night.

Thomas Jefferson was the third county team to fall last week. The Gryphons controlled their own destiny to win the conference title in a game at home last week, but fell 30-20 to Bessemer City.  Trey McGhee has 15 tackles, while Michael Minder had 13 in the loss. The Gryphons will travel to Pine Lake Prep this weekend and play a Brett Hayford team that probably won’t be easy to beat.

Chesnee (8-1, 6-0) continues to win and the streak is now eight. The Golden Eagles easily dispatched of Blacksburg on the road last week 49-21. They will host undefeated Woodruff (9-0, 6-0) on Halloween night.

And finally, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has a Martinsville clock. After 30 tries and coming up short, Junior got past Tony Stewart in the final four laps to claim his first ever Martinsville win.

“This place is so special to me. I have wanted to win here so badly.” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said. “I can’t believe we have won here at Martinsville.” I have wanted to win that grandfather clock ever since I was a little boy and I finally have one.

Junior held off Jeff Gordon and had 11 top 5’s to his credit before landing into victory lane at the half mile paper clip.
