What can you say? Last Friday night was a rough one as all four county football teams lost on the gridiron to much better teams. All four of those losses were to teams who have traditionally been pretty good in the sport.

Chase suffered a 55-13 loss at Freedom, Shelby foiled East Rutherford 43-7, Burns couldn’t be stopped as R-S Central was topped 60-6 and Hendersonville rolled 56-17 over Thomas Jefferson.

However, it will be Chase at East Rutherford for the County championship on Friday night.

Chase (7-3) has lost the two previous meeting to East, but scrap the past, both have obvious reasons to be excited about this game in particular. Not only do the two schools play for bragging rights, they also are fighting for a higher seed as a No. 2 from the SMAC for the upcoming 2A playoffs.

East Rutherford (5-5) will have to hold up Chase’s Carlos Watkins while on offense and try to keep an eye on quarterback Tyreece Gossett when on defense.

Chase looks to give East quarterback Maddox Stamey little time to make decisions and will have to corral T.J. Watkins and Rahkim Franklin in the Cavalier backfield.

Chase will be without the services of two players after two players were ejected last week at Freedom for fighting. Freedom had five ejected and may not even make the playoffs as a result of NCHSAA rules.

R-S Central will host South Caldwell and Thomas Jefferson welcomes Owen this Friday.

In boys soccer, if Thomas Jefferson (14-3) is going to pick up the No.1 seed for the 1A playoffs, they will had to beat Hendersonville and Owen this week. The Gryphons haven’t beaten either team all year. To win the Western Highland Conference title outright, Owen and Hendersonville have to lose both of its schedule conference matches this week.

Meanwhile, R-S Central should get a No. 2 seed in the 3A boys soccer playoff brackets. If they beat Burns or a Patton lost to Freedom this week, gives them a home game in the playoffs. Central missed the postseason last year.

Of the three county teams, only Chase was able to come through in the first round of volleyball playoffs. The No. 1 seeded Lady Trojans (13-4) took care of West Lincoln in three straight sets at home on Saturday. They hosted North Henderson (16-9) on Tuesday in the second round of the 2A playoffs.

East Rutherford, who also got a home playoff game, lost to Mountain Heritage and ends the Lady Cavaliers season at 11-5. In 3A action, R-S Central fell 3-1 to Crest to end their season at 8-7.

On the NASCAR scene, the series goes to my favorite track on the circuit in Martinsville, Virginia. Jimmie Johnson has suffered deeply in back-to-back races and has fallen to 50 points back of the leaders and probably won‘t win a sixth straight title because of it. At the moment, it looks like Carl Edwards championship to win with a 14-point lead over teammate, Matt Kenseth. Although, Martinsville is one of Roush/Fenway’s biggest hurdles. Kenseth and Edwards have both struggled there in the past.

Expect to see a ton of contact this weekend with Martinsville’s close quarters racing at the half-mile short track.

Brad Keselowski, Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick round out the top five in points and remain 26 points or less behind Edwards. Of the top five in the standings, only Stewart and Harvick have won at Martinsville before.
