Rutherford County received recognition recently as a certified Work Ready Community, and is one of the first to receive this recognition in the state.

In order to be certified as a NCWorks Work Ready County, a community must meet the following criteria:

- A letter of commitment to workforce excellence from county leaders.

- Progress in the high school graduation rate toward the goal of 94 percent.

- Achieve the number of National Career Readiness Certificates indicated in the common criteria.

- Gain commitment from employers to recognize the National Career Readiness Certificate.

During an announcement of the recognition held recently at Isothermal Community College, ICC President Walter Dalton told those in attendance that intensive efforts are being made to offer training to the existing work force and that programs designed to train people for future opportunities are around the corner. Rutherford County Schools Assistant Superintendent Dr. David Sutton reported on benchmarks of accomplishments students are achieving and the efforts being made to help every graduate become prepared for an ever-changing future. Rutherford County Commissioners Chairman Bryan King expressed the significance of working together and continuing to work in preparation toward a new era of economic growth for Rutherford County.

By participating in the NCWorks Certified Work Ready Communities initiative, counties, regions and states are helping business and industry know which foundational skills are needed for a productive workforce as well as helping individuals understand which skills are required by employers. Additionally, participation allows policy makers to consistently measure the skills gap in a timely manner, educators to close the skills gap via tools integrated into career pathways with stackable industry-recognized credentials and economic developers use for an on-demand reporting tool to market the quality of their workforce.

The North Carolina Chamber Foundation serves as the final certifying body to designate a NC Works Certified Work Ready Community.
