Del “Bill” Rollins, age 77, of Rutherfordton, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2015.

Del “Bill” Rollins, age 77, of Rutherfordton, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2015.

Born July 11, 1937 in Rutherford County, he was the son of the late D.C. Rollins and Vesta Henderson Rollins. He was a veteran of the US Air Force and US Army, having served during two tours of duty in Vietnam. Del was a recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart and retired as an Army Captain after twenty-one years of service.  He also worked for the US Postal Service for twenty years and was a supervisor at the Forest City Post Office before his retirement. Del was an accomplished guitar player and enjoyed playing chess. He was also an avid fan of Star Trek and NCIS.  He had a wonderful sense of humor and was loved by all who met him.  He was a tremendous man who lived an amazing life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Don Rollins; sister, Margaret Babnew and a great-grandson, Elisha Garcia.

Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Butch Rollins; three daughters, Robbin Waters and husband, Robert of Rutherfordton, Joni Bales and husband, Mark of Chesnee, SC and Debbie Shytle also of Rutherfordton; four sisters, Joann Hewitt of Forest City, Gail Trunk of New Bern, NC, Brenda Latham and husband, Bill of Lattimore and Wanda Connor of Shelby; one brother, Ted Rollins and wife, Patsy of Forest City; sister-in-law, Sue Ellingson of Tucson, AZ. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Tabitha Williams, Stephen Moore, Brandon Green, Summer Battison, Jackie Wilson, Haley Bradley; step-grandson, Robbie Waters; numerous great-grandchildren and a host of friends and acquaintances at the local Wal-Mart.

In honor of Del’s last wishes, there will be no formal services.

Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice of Rutherford County, PO Box 336, Forest City, NC  28043.

Harrelson Funeral and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements.
