Last week, East Rutherford and Thomas Jefferson football moved to 6-0 on the year, but both face a rival this coming week.

R-S Central (1-5) at East Rutherford (6-0)

For the first time in 20 years, East Rutherford is 6-0 on the football field. Central had a by week as they try to regroup for this one in Forest City.

What Central must do? 1)Ground and pound at the East Defensive line. 2)Force East turnovers. 3) keep time of possession. East has found trouble staying off the field defensively and Polk went for almost 200 yards on the ground in the first half last week to stay with East. However, East came back and won 54-21 after being down 21-20 at the break.

What East must do? 1) Don't make dumb mistakes. 2) Execute. 3)Don't take R-S Central lightly.

Cameron Simmons accounted for over 225 yards passing and running the football and had a hand in four touchdowns last week. Central's C.J. Hannon is the best offensive weapon so far this season. I like Central to stay around in the first half, but East pulls away in the second half. East 48-14.

Thomas Jefferson (6-0) at Community School of Davidson (4-2)

Going three years back, it was CSD that knocked TJCA out of the playoffs in what has been the deepest Gryphon run to date. However, CSD isn't the same team, while TJCA has remained a top tier 1A club.

The Gryphons destroyed Pine Lake Prep last week 49-0, but visit Community School of Davidson this Friday.

This has trap game written all over it. CSD barely beat Cherryville last week, but the Spartans only run for 99 yards a game. Throwing is the strength with Austin Fekete who has a 250-yard average per game.

This one comes down to whose defense I trust the most and it ain't the Spartans. Thomas Jefferson...42-20.

Chase (2-4) at Shelby (3-3) The Trojans have now one a game more than they had in the previous year as they earned win number two on the season last week. Chase disappeared in the first half, but rebounded to put away Avery County 34-19 last Friday.

Garrett Hampton, Kaden Hampton Kayshawn Woods, Elijah McDowell and Kiylan Miller all played huge roles as they bounced back from a tough loss the previous week at Brevard.

Now they have to play at Shelby this coming Friday. Chase has never beaten Shelby. Even if Shelby hasn't quite performed as well as many thought they would this season, they are still athletic and they are still Shelby. The Golden Lions seem to be playing better as they easily beat Mount Pleasant last week.

Shelby 34, Chase 12

What a finish last weekend at the Roval in Charlotte? I can't really blame Jimmie Johnson for what he did. He certainly could have kept his playoff run intact by finishing second, but instead he went for the win on Martin Truex Jr. Johnson lost control on the next to last turn, spun through the grass and accidentally backed into Truex as they were coming to the checkered flag.

Let's face it, Jimmie Johnson hasn't been in championship form all year and in the midst of a 51-race winless streak. This was the inaugural event and the race shop is all but a half-mile from the track at best. So, why not go for it all. This was the closest he has been all season at getting a win. I hate it for both of them, but Ryan Blaney got quite a gift in getting by the accident and taking the win.
