Last week, not only did conference play begin, but county rival games did so on the basketball court.

East Rutherford and R-S Central battled first this past week with the East boys outlasting Central 81-76.

Jay Blanton went on a three-point rampage, hitting eight for the Hilltoppers in scoring 33, but Jarvis Hopper nearly matched that effort scoring 29 with four other Cavs in double figures.

During the latter half of the week, Devonte Boykins returned as the Cavs dismantled Patton. After an ACL injury sidelined him for six months, it’s good to see Boykins back on court.

Central (7-4, 1-1) redeemed themselves, downing Chase to end the week. Like Central, Chase split conference games this week as they started off downing Patton. Chase’s inside game and second chance opportunities were enough to hold off Patton in that victory.

On the ladies side, R-S Central (7-4, 2-0) topped East Rutherford for the eighth straight time in the rivalry.

Alyssia Watkins (13 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists) Tia Bristol (17 points) and Taylor Miller (15 points) rallied the Lady Hilltoppers to a 61-52 victory.

East Rutherford’s girls got past Patton at the end of the week, moving to 7-2, 1-1 on the season.

East Rutherford’s boys (8-2, 2-0) will head to a Christmas Tourney that 16 of the most premier high school basketball teams in the country are invited to play amongst. The Beach Ball Classic is held in Myrtle Beach and they will first see King of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

R-S Central boys will go to Freedom, the girls visit Cherokee, while Chase girls and boys will head to Cherryville’s Christmas Tourney this weekend.

As for the NFL, the playoff picture looks clearer with the AFC complete, except for who will be the number one seed.

On the NFC side, Russell Wilson used to play in Coastal Plain League, but football seems to be a great fall back sport. Once playing quarterback at N.C. State and Wisconsin, he also was successful in baseball standards too, playing for the Gastonia Grizzlies before being draft into the NFL by the Seattle Seahawks.

The Seahawks are a few teams that seem to be surging right now as the playoffs start next weekend and clinched a playoff spot this past week.

Right now, Minnesota holds the last wildcard spot, but Chicago or Dallas could make it depending on what the Vikings do on Sunday.

It’s a shock, but the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants are done this season. The Giants still have a glimmer of hope, but they have to win this weekend, plus have Minnesota, Dallas and Chicago lose to even have a shot.

As we close out 2012, there have been some wild stuff happen this year, but I still think the craziest thing that happened this year came back in February.

The possibility of hitting a jet dryer on the racetrack…Juan in a trillion. Juan Montoya, speeding down the backstretch then broke loose after the suspension on the car failed. As a result, he slammed into a jet dryer on the race track which ignited 200 gallons of fuel. While nobody was injured, nothing like that has ever happened in stock car history and delaying the race another 2 hours plus. It became the longest Daytona 500 after weather delays and crashes had already marred the event.

Maybe by next week I can come up with a few more year and review things to discuss.
