Once again, Shelby and East Rutherford meeting on the basketball court produced another one decided by seven points or less for the ninth time in a row. Unfortunately, it was East Rutherford (5-2, 3-1) on the losing end of a 68-62 game last Friday.

“Shelby just outplayed us in the first half,” East Rutherford coach Brad Levine said. “In the second half, Shelby got too many easy shots and our youth really showed tonight.”

No doubt, Shelby beat East on the glass, came up with the loose ball more often and blocked more shots in the first half. Shelby led 36-24 at the break.

The Cavaliers came out a little more composed in the second half. Following three point plays by Travis Waldroup-Rodriguez (18 points/ 10 rebounds) and Devonte Boykins (19 points/10 rebounds) to slice the lead to 50-46 by the end of the third period. And Kaleb McEntire’s defense was impressive for East in the second half.

Even Shelby Boys basketball Coach Aubrey Hollifield wasn’t surprised by how East came out in the second half.

“I knew they were going to fight back, Hollifield said. You can’t hold back Devonte and East forever. They are a great team, well coached and I believe people got their moneys worth tonight.”

However, every time East Rutherford cut the lead to four points, Shelby found a way to go back up by 10 in a hurry.

In the end, it was too much Gabe Devoe who put up 33 points and most of those were contested shots. The one three point basket in the second quarter where Devoe was trapped in the corner and faded back to knock it down showed why Clemson signed him already. Devoe was held to two field goals in the second half, but hit seven late free throws to seal it.

The Cavalier boys will go to the Dorman Classic in Spartanburg this weekend and play Gaffney on Friday night at 7.

East Rutherford’s girls (4-2, 3-1) destroyed Shelby 69-33 and will play in Landrum’s Christmas tourney this weekend.

R-S Central easily picked up the sweep in boys and girls basketball. R-S Central’s boys (5-3, 2-2) and girls will go to the Freedom High for a Christmas tourney this weekend. Chase boys and girls will travel to Cherryville this weekend for a tourney. Thomas Jefferson boys hoops team (4-2, 1-0) has now won three games in a row and both the boys in girls will be with Chase at the same tourney in Cherryville this weekend.

Who is playoff bound in the NFL? Despite injuries and losing for half of the game, the Carolina Panthers eked out a 17-13 win in the final 30 seconds over New Orleans this past weekend and make the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Luke Kueckly (NFL game record 24 tackles and added an interception) and Thomas Davis (14 tackles with an interception) put on a show from their linebacker spots as the defense was incredible this past week.

No doubt it was one of the biggest wins in franchise history and during the regular season, but the body of work for the Panthers isn’t quite done yet.

If Carolina can win at Atlanta this weekend, they will at least secure a first round bye and a No.2 seed. If Carolina wins and Seattle loses to St. Louis next week, then they will nab the No.1 seed. If Carolina loses and New Orleans wins, the Panthers will likely have the five seed, which would put them on the road in the playoffs.

Dallas and Philly fight for the NFC East title this weekend and that should be intriguing. Even Chicago and Green Bay for the NFC North should be interesting. For right now, it looks like nobody in the AFC wants the final wildcard spot and it‘s a complete mess, but it will be settled this weekend. Here is my top ten NFL power rankings this week.

10) Arizona 9)Cincy 8) Philadelphia 7)Kansas City 6)New England 5)San Francisco 4)New Orleans 3)Carolina 2) Seattle 1)Denver.

Congrats to Lenior-Rhyne football, who made their first ever Division II National Championship game in Florence, Alabama this past Saturday. Unfortunately, Southwest Missouri St. was too much in every phase of the game. Two early turnovers really hurt them and they were down 17-0 early. Still, they had an impressive season and should be proud of what they accomplished.

And finally, here’s to wishing everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
