A recent graduate of the advertising and graphic design program at Isothermal Community College believes that her experiences as a student are what led her to the job she landed before even receiving her degree.

Megan Junge of Polk County said she knew about Isothermal as a life-long listener of the campus' radio station, WNCW. When she decided it was time to update her skills and focus on graphic design, she chose Isothermal.

"I had heard a lot of good things from locals and know they have a good reputation in the community," she said.

A non-traditional student, Junge already had a certificate in commercial graphics and printing from Spartanburg Community College. When choosing where to update her skills, Isothermal fit her criteria.

"Affordability was a big factor - there were a lot of scholarships and they made it work economically," she said. "Attending classes was feasible for a non-traditional student like myself. At Isothermal I was able to have my credits transferred and get my associate's degree in five semesters."

Junge began working part-time with Kangaroo Golf and Condar, located in Polk County, in January. Prior to graduation, she was offered a full-time position as staff designer.

"The publicity I received through Isothermal - such as when I won photography awards - put me on the map," she said. "When I went into the interview, my current boss had Googled my name and found those awards."

The skills she gained through her classes also provided a solid foundation for the tasks she completes in her job.

Like Junge, many students who choose to enter the advertising and graphic design program at Isothermal are seeking opportunities for employment where they can utilize their creativity through art, design and photography, said Cathy Alexander, advertising and graphic design instructor.

"The visual design industry is flourishing and the need for qualified individuals that can create original artwork will continue as well," Alexander said. "Because of the unique diversity of the program, those who seek employment directly after graduation can find positions with local companies in the in-house design departments, photography studios, commercial printers, sign companies, textiles and some have become business owners."
