First Annual Run Against Addiction A Success!

The lady who shared her story and wouldn’t take no for an answer, Angela Sanford address the crowd.

As the crowd gathered and continued to grow, the positive feeling of an impending success also grew. The founder of the movement, Angela Sanford started things off with a talk of how good things can happen in Rutherford County for the benefit of all its’ citizens. She told of her own story and repeated her often heard theme: “We are not going to quit”. The registered runners for the event totaled 310. There were runners and walkers of all ages which did not include the kids Fun Run. The crowd was not only enthusiastic but determined to make this first event a success and assure its’ continuance every year. 

Those participating were a definite cross section of all in Rutherford County. The winner of the 5K was everyone! The first runner to come across the finish line was Almon Cox from Union Mills, with a winning time of 17.38. Mr. Cox, a recovered meth user, stated “running is my new addiction”. He has been clean for three years and does everything and anything to assist others. He turned out to be not only the first place winner but the perfect individual to be a shinning example for the “run against addiction”. He is to be congratulated for his participation and commitment to such a great cause.

The Run Against Addiction was held at the Epicenter Church, 131 Countryside Drive in Forest City. Pastors, Dr. Joseph and Lynette Dutton were very hands on in helping make this worthy 5K run a resounding success. Everyone was welcomed and cheered as they participated and crossed the finish line. It was not a normal 5K run. It was a 5K achievement and belief for those who were committed to make a better life for those once fallen and now rising up, knowing the possibility of a better life.
