On Tuesday, May 29, 2018, Rutherford County Schools held its annual Retiree Banquet to honor the individuals who retired during, or will retire at the end of, the school year. Forty-five educators, administrators and support staff were celebrated at this year's banquet.
In this year's cohort of retirees, the average years of service to Rutherford County Schools is 21.5 years, with a combined 974 years of service to RCSNC students between all retirees. After a wonderful 37-year career with Rutherford County Schools, Debbie Brewer, an EC teacher at Forrest Hunt Elementary, is retiring with the longest tenure of this year's class.
Also joining 2018 retirees are sisters Shawn Parker and Shay Guffey. Parker is a language arts teacher at East Rutherford High. Guffey is an EC teacher at R-S Central High. Both sisters are retiring with 29 years of service to RCSNC and were honored by having their respective schools' yearbooks dedicated to them this year. Parker and Guffey remarked that it is very special to be honored and retiring alongside each other.
Retiree Banquet guest speaker, Lisa Harris Bralley, praised the work of the retirees by highlighting the consistently rising graduation rate in Rutherford County Schools, which reached its highest ever recorded mark with the 2016-17 graduating class. From the bus driver who is the first person to greet students daily to the teacher assistants who are the "right and left hands" of teachers to the teachers themselves, Bralley attributed the combined efforts and unyielding care of all school system personnel as being the catalysts behind the growth and success of RCSNC students as she applauded and thanked the banquet's honorees for their service to Rutherford County children.
