Franklin Eugene "Gene" Smith, age 82

Franklin Eugene "Gene" Smith, age 82 of Forest City passed away Saturday, May 21, 2016.

Gene was born September 28, 1933 in Forest City and was a son of the late William Clyde and Johnnie Mae Matheny Smith. He was a graduate of Cool Springs High School Class of 1953 and worked for Public Service Gas of North Carolina where he retired with over thirty years service. Gene was an owner and partner in several business in Rutherford County and he enjoyed camping and travel with his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-eight years, Muriel Huffstickler Smith, three sons, Tim Smith and Jeff Smith both of Spindale, Ivey Smith of Rutherfordton, a daughter, Gena Smith Daves of Sunshine, NC, a sister, Sandra Smith Bumgardner of Rutherfordton, and four grandchildren. There is also one great-grandchild as well as numerous bonus great-grandchildren that he loved.

A graveside memorial service was held at the Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Greg Huntley officiating. A celebration of Gene's life followed in the Rock Springs Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
