Genealogical Society seeks submissions for volume two of heritage book

More than 30 years have passed since the publication of "The Heritage of Rutherford County, NC - Volume 1." Now, a new hardbound book featuring the stories and pictures of families in Rutherford County will be printed in late 2016, and the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County is seeking submissions for publication.

"It's good to update the history of our county," said Becky Edwards, a member of the society.

There are families who were not featured in the first volume, said Society President Alice Bradley, and the purpose of the book is to provide new and updated information.

"We won't be republishing information," she said.

The book's publisher visited with the group earlier this month and gave a presentation on how families can share their stories. All residents, former residents and those with roots in Rutherford County may submit family stories of 750-1,000 words (double-spaced) and one photo per household.

Society members have been receiving submissions already. Members are available to provide assistance to inndividuals who would like to submit a story, but are unsure of what to write, Bradley said.

"Our group is made up of researchers and writers, and with our backgrounds and the nature of what we do here daily, we cover a lot of ground," said member Jim Brewer.

Only a certain number of books will be printed, Bradley said, and copies are being pre-sold. Because this is a limited edition book, only those who order and pay in advance are guaranteed a copy. Copies which will be picked up at the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County at 319 Doggett Road in Forest City are $75; those to be shipped will be sold for $85.

The book is one that is sure to be coveted, Edwards said.

"Copies of Volume 1 go for up to $300 on eBay," she said.
