Recently retired successful Forest City businessman, George Miller, Jr. , Second Vice President.

It was a different time in Rutherford County history. Segregation still existed. With increased population a new high school was built for the black community. It was named George Washington Carver High School. There was a black principal, all black teachers as well as students. At the time, it was just the way it was all over America. The school opened in 1952 and closed in 1969.

It is now known as Carver Center.

Today, the graduates now come together with a spirit of pride and thankfulness. The school colors of maroon and white again are evident as the annual five day event takes place.

When I met with the President, Second Vice-President and Treasurer they each spoke of the Carver Eagle imprint. That imprint still continues today. They each said how Carver impacted their lives. President Linda Ford Smith, Second Vice-President, George Miller, Jr., and Treasurer, Ulysses D. Miller echoed these life long sentiments. "To me Carver was the roll model... expectations were high... every student was expected to do their best... for me, it was a chance to get a good education... respect was always expected... if you wanted to play sports, you had to excel... you had to be a lady and gentleman... Carver gave us lifelong friends... it was a great, influential time in our lives for which we are all very grateful."

This seemed to sum up the very positive and continuing education which Carver High School graduates hold dear. Today, Thursday, they offer thanks and begin to celebrate. They all have success stories which are now part of the Rutherford County community. We congratulate these special "Mighty Carver Eagles"! May your spirits always soar.
