Gladys Byers, age 88

Gladys Byers, age 88, of Rutherfordton, NC, passed away Friday, February 21, 2014. 

Born April 27, 1925 in Spartanburg County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Floyd Hammett and Lisher Blackwell Hammett.  Gladys was a graduate of Harris High School and worked in the dietary service of Willow Ridge Nursing Home and Rutherford Hospital for many years.  She was a faithful and longtime member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. Gladys enjoyed sewing, needlework, canning and especially taking care of her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 45 years, Clayton Katy Byers; two infant daughters; brother, Bufford Hammett; four sisters, Julia Oliver, Bulah Cartee, Alice McDaniel and Beatrice Henson.

Survivors include two sons, Clayton Eugene Byers of Forest City and Randy Byers and wife, Rhonda of Ellenboro; seven daughters, Betty Ann Byers of Rutherfordton, Margaret McDaniel of Dallas, NC, Sophie Sinclair Cooper and husband, Cooper of Campobello, SC, Barbara Hodge and husband, Ronnie of Rutherfordton, Mary Frashier and husband, Mark of Rutherfordton, Debra Frashier and husband, Dean of Forest City and Vicky Hollifield and husband, Ted also of Rutherfordton. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted at the Holly Springs Baptist Church with Reverend Wade Huntley and Reverend Tim Hodge officiating.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.
