Soap like materials dates back to 2800 BC in ancient Babylon. The word sopa is Latin for soap. Liquid Soap was not invented until the 1800’s. In 1865, a man by the name of William Shepphard patented liquid soap.

In 2013, Glenwood Christian Academy in Bostic began making gallons of liquid soap to give to people in the community. It is an outreach program of the school. This great idea came from the school Supervisor, Frankie McDaniel. It has proven to be a big success. All the children now get together to make soap. It teaches them the meaning of charity and community involvement. It is part of what Pastor Jason Tony likes to see in the schools “biblical based environment.” Every student is very enthusiastic about the program. They each have a desk and are given their studies, but get very excited when it’s “soap making time”.

Glenwood Christian Academy is located in the back of Glenwood Baptist Church which sits up on the hill in Bostic. This June, the church will sponsor a big clothing give away at the church. Those who participate may come and get free clothing, as much as they need, and then will be given a gallon of the Glenwood Christian Academy soap.

The soap making process takes two days. The children first must shred Fels Naptha bar soap and then add the other two ingredients, 20 Mule Team Borax and Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda. In a five gallon bucket, hot water will be used to melt the ingredients and bring them all together. The solution must cure overnight. When ready the next day, the students will mix it well and then put it in five gallon jugs and add a label. They have also made hand soap and disinfectant soap.

This unique program is such a great idea, because everyone needs soap to clean their clothes. The Glenwood Christian Academy is fulfilling a definite need for the community!
