Some of the members at American Legion Post 423 who helped with the Veterans Salute collection are: (left to right) Frank Pleasant, Ron Baynard, Charles Vickers (back), Post Commander Donald Cubb, and Kenneth Scruggs.

Tucked away at 406 Boss Moore Road in Caroleen, North Carolina is American Legion Post 423. It occupies a former school house and also some very dedicated men of the American Legion. It has about 105 members but the most active ones are about 30. This post 423 has been around since 1947. The current Post Commander who has served for eight years is Donald Cudd. The Sons of American Legion is also part of the post and is headed up by Commander Ron Baynard. The makeup of this post includes a 90 year old World War II member and 3 Korean War members. Most of the current members are from the Vietnam War. Post Commander Donald Cudd would welcome Afghanistan and Iraq veterans to join 423. The phrase that describes and best fits American Legion Post 423 in Caroleen is “salt of the earth”. This phrase is derived from the Bible, Matthew 5:13 “Ye are the salt of the earth”. The meaning conveys “Those of great worth and reliability.” That folks, best indicates the heart of 423 and the men who are dedicated volunteers who still serve our country.

The 423 decided that during the month of June, they would be collecting needed items for veterans and then take them to the VA Hospital in Asheville in July. They put out a list of items that were not furnished by the hospital for the veteran patients. They felt it was up to them to help the veterans in the hospital and let them know how much they are appreciated and that we still care about them. They sent out notices to churches and other community members and stated that they would pick up the contributions or they could drop them by the post on Boss Moore Road in Caroleen.

What happened was a total surprise! Post Commander Donald Cudd said with a smile on his face: “The result was beyond our expectations.” Quite frankly everyone at post 423 who worked on this project was overwhelmed.

Here is an inventory of the results representing over $4000 and over 60 packed boxes. 120 shave creams; 800 disposal razors; 500 tooth pastes; 300 tooth brushes; 55 denture cleaners; 40 shampoos; 600 bath soaps; 250 paper back books; 600 puzzle books; 100 pair white socks; 120 stick deodorants; 80 magazines and 15 mouth washes. They are now packed for shipping in 60 boxes.

The men at American Legion Post 423 can’t thank enough all those who participated. Isn’t it just great what can happen when you reach out to ask for help in thanking our veterans. It is quite a salute! Needless to say,  a true example of the American spirit!
