Ground was broken Monday afternoon for the $31 million R-S Middle School. As the ceremony was held, land was being cleared for the new school that could be open for the 2021-2022 school year. The school will be located on the property where R-S Central High School is off US 221, north of Rutherfordton.

The Rutherford County Schools' Board of Education was joined by the Rutherford County Commissioners, County Manager Steve Garrison, Isothermal Community College President Walter Dalton, other college officials and leaders from Spindale, Forest City and Rutherfordton.

Dr. David Sutton, superintendent of Rutherford County Schools, welcomed staff, administrators, teachers and students to the ceremony.

"I couldn't think of a better way to start the new year than to build a new school," Sutton said.

After the ceremony that included brief speeches from Board of Education Chair Sherry Bright and Commission Chair Bryan King, the official ground breaking ceremony was underway.

Students joined the ground breaking ceremony as they picked up shovels, representing the future of the new school building.

The new R-S Middle School is expected to cost approximately $31 million. Officials are optimistic the new school will be ready for the 2021-2022 school year.

After the school is built, the R-S Middle School campus, located in Rutherfordton, will be the location of a new school system bus garage/transportation center.

In November 2019, the Rutherford County Schools (RCS) became one of six school districts in North Carolina awarded construction money through the Needs-Based Public School Capital Fund. RCS will receive $15 million that will help fund construction of R-S Middle School.
