There are many people who are hungry in North Carolina. This fact is the reason behind an organization named Hunters For The Hungry. It was founded in 1993. It is an amazing, non-profit organization which utilizes a very practical approach for feeding high protein venison to those in need. Everyone can be a part of this either by harvesting deer or making a contribution to the organization.

The fact is that America’s deer population, which numbered 20 million in 1990  increased to 34 million by the year 2000.

1.25 million in North Carolina alone. There has been a dramatic increase in crop damage sustained by farmers and deer related auto collisions throughout the state. Hunting was found to be the most and only cost effective way of controlling and maintaining a stable deer population. Because of these facts, a surplus of nutritious venison can and is the best way to feed the hungry in our state.

Here’s how it works. Hunters can harvest deer and contribute them to Hunters For The Hungry. They harvest the deer from the over abundant population. Then the deer is turned over to an approved meat processor, who in turn produces deer burger meat. The deer burger is packaged in quarter pound packs and frozen. It is then distributed to individuals, shelters, soup kitchens and other agencies. There are very strict and guidelines on the proper manner in which to donate the deer. The appropriate rules and regulations of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission need to be followed. Also, deer must be delivered to a NCHFTH (North Carolina Hunters For The Hungry) designated processing facility. All information is always available at their website: NCHuntersForTheHungry.org.

Through the tax deductible donations of individuals, corporations, and organizations approved meat processors are reimbursed for their expense of producing the deer burger meat.

If you are a hunter, you can help by harvesting deer to feed the hungry. If you are a concerned and caring citizen, organization or corporation you can help by making a contribution to defray the cost of processing the high protein meat so your neighbors can survive and eat. It is simplistic program and a great way to feed the hungry of our state and county. It only takes a little to give a lot! Embrace this magnificent program and you’ll be forever glad you did.

When you sit down with your family for a dinner, why not feel that your contribution to Hunters For The Hungry is allowing a fellow North Carolinian to sit down an enjoy a good meal too. That, is a great and rewarding feeling.
