Hickory Nut Gorge Becomes a Winter Wonderland During WinterFest

From now until January 1, Hickory Nut Gorge will be transformed into a winter wonderland during the area’s second WinterFest in the Gorge.

“Our unique mountain setting makes it perfect for a winter wonderland,” said Tina Wolfe, a representative of the Hickory Nut Gorge Chamber, which is in charge of the event. “Hickory Nut Gorge allows regional residents the opportunity to get away from it all without the cost of an expensive European vacation or a cross country trip. With a resort destination right in your own backyard, why would you go anywhere else?”

The Chamber launched the event in 2013 to create off-season events for local businesses in order to extend the business season, Wolfe said. And, it gives families a wholesome, fun activity to do together during the holiday season.

“The holidays are about spending time with families, and what better way to entertain the whole family - from toddlers to grandparents - than hayrides, live music, shopping and, of course, photos with Santa,” Wolfe added.

Hayrides will be held this Friday and Saturday, and the rides go between Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. Cost of the hayrides are $5 per person and $20 for families of four or more.

If you’d rather ride in more comfort, trolley tours with various stops are also being offered.

Michelle Yelton, who lives in the Gorge, attended with her family last year.

“It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “You could start at the beach and have s’mores and then hop on the trolley and stop at the welcome center to see Santa and do crafts with your kids.”

The event has grown this year, Wolfe said, with a chili cook-off that was held on December 5.

“We also have live music at the entrance to the Riverwalk in Chimney Rock Village featuring great local musicians,” Wolfe said.

WinterFest culminates with the New Year’s Day Polar Plunge. This year the Polar Plunge will be held at the pool at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa.
