High school basketball (Men's)

East Rutherford is on fire early on. The Cavs just beat Burns 94-55 this past week to run their record to 7-0, 3-0. The Cavs are winning by 20-plus points per game right now and it really is no surprise considering the roster they have.

Behind Mailk Hamrick, Juwan Blanton, Chris Searcy, Stephen Archie, Tyrese Carson, Ryan Carson and Christian Walker, the Cavs are in stealth mode. They are running the floor well and scoring like crazy to start the season. They haven't score less than 75 points in a game so far this year.

They host Draughn (12/16) and go to Crest (12/20) before the Christmas break.

R-S Central is coming around. The Hilltoppers are now 4-2, 2-0 and are winners of four straight games. Behind Zyrion Wilkins, Tyrese Tate, Jacob Knox, Arnie Twitty, Chris Miller and Josh Wharton, they are getting better every game. Defensively, they are playing well, but they do get a tough stretch of games here soon.

The Hilltoppers are at Kings Mountain on Friday (12/16) at home Tuesday with East Burke (12/20) and visit Shelby (12/21).

Chase has struggled, but they are up to two wins on the season. The Trojans have beaten Chesnee and East Henderson behind the scoring of Tyreece McSwain and Rashad Wilkins. They go to Bessemer City on (12/19) and host Kings Mountain on (12/20)

Thomas Jefferson has struggled so far as well. The Gryphons have won just once and take on MIC on the road 12/16. That's the last game before the Christmas break.

Ladies basketball

R-S Central hasn't dealt with much problem so far this season. They are now 6-0 and don't have quite the depth as a year ago. Still, they are rolling with a nice inside/outside game provided by Kyra Davis and Aliyah Whiteside. Jada Logan is also doing a great job leading at the point.

East Rutherford is still coming together as they are 3-4, 1-2 at the moment. It's a little shocking that they already have four losses, but they played well down the stretch a year ago. They are much deeper than a year ago. No doubt, they will figure it out and I like their chances to be in the top third of the conference.

Chase got its first win of the season as they beat Chesnee 52-47 last week.

Thomas Jefferson is still winless on the year, but put up its best quarter of the year on Friday despite the loss against Bessemer City.
