Here we are! Week 1 of high school football starts this Friday, August 22. All games are a 7:30 kickoff. Below are some players to watch tonight and what your team will need to do in order to find victory.

Newton-Conover at Chase: It was one year ago that Chase overcame a fourth quarter deficit to beat the Red Devils on the road. This year, Chase is younger and Coach Bailey said that they would make a few mistakes along the way. In last week’s scrimmage, they had a fumbling problem which needs to be nipped in the bud now.

Newton Conover will be athletic and they have a new coach in Matt Beam that usually has no problem in finding ways for his offense to score. The Trojans were impressively able to move the ball, but couldn’t find a way to score in their final scrimmage. Keys to game for Chase: Chase has to keep possession, not commit turnovers and score in red zone when given chance.

Key players to watch for: Tyrell Boykins (Ch) Jalen Jackson (Ch)

R-S Central at McDowell: There may not be a team in the county who is more vested in getting over the hump in week 1 than R-S Central. The Hilltoppers have lost the last two meetings with the Titans by one point each time. McDowell entered Central territory just twice last year and that was all they needed on offense. Casey Ray will quarterback for the Titans, who threw for over 1,000 yards in just eight games last year.

Keys to game for R-S Central: Defense must set tone, offensive line has to grow up quickly tonight. Lastly, motivation factor for the results of the last two meetings is fine, but loosen up just a smidgen tonight.

Key players: Matt Atchley (RS), Ivan Gutierrez (RS) Dallas Myers (McD), Casey Ray (McD)

East Rutherford at Erwin: The Cavaliers hosted one of the toughest teams in Western North Carolina last year in Erwin. However, this isn’t the same team of a year ago. Erwin graduated half of their team that lost just twice a year ago. The Warriors will still be athletic, but youthful. The Cavaliers are a capable team in giving other opponents problems and a win tonight would only build that confidence.

Keys to the game for East Rutherford: Use lineman advantage (East is bigger), play smart football, but find an aggressive identity within the means.

Key players: Calvin Camp (East), Kameron Garrison (East), Chavis Williams (Erw)

Thomas Jefferson at Cramer: The Gryphons visit one of the newest high school in the state as they head to Cramer and face the Storm in Gastonia. Cramer did play junior varsity ball last season and went 3-7, but this is the first year for varsity. Cramer likes the spread offense, but they are extremely young everywhere. Many believe that the Storm may not even win a game this season, but this is varsity level football. Take no one lightly!

Keys to the game: Just execute. Have fun. All the pressure is on the home team.

Key players: Tyler Mitchell (TJ), Mason Martin (TJ) and Noah Oxendine (CR)

Broome at Chesnee: Broome has nearly twice as many young men playing football this season as Chesnee does this season. The same can be said about last year too. Chesnee’s high powered offense was too much in a 39-21 victory last year over Broome. Who says they can’t do it again? Losing in the semifinals last year, should be motivation to get Chesnee going to start the new season.

Key Players: Kavarius Surratt (Ches), Booby Foos (Ches), Des Anderson (Br).

A big congrats to the Rutherfordton Junior League baseball team who finished third in the country and fifth overall in the World over in Taylor, Michigan this past week. They rolled past the eventual National Champs from Texas, 17-3 and finished with a 3-2 record last week.
