High School Football: Thomas Jefferson got over 300 yards of offense from Nomi McMullens and four touchdowns from Bill Lay this past weekend. It still wasn't enough as an upstart Cherryville scored with 33 seconds to go to break Gryphon hearts for the second weekend in a row.

Cherryville, who won 35-34, should win two or three games down the stretch and I knew that the Ironmen could be a trap game. It turned out to be just that. Thomas Jefferson will host Community School of Davidson on Friday (10.14.16).

Chase and R-S Central played Monday due to a postponement due to expected rainfall from Hurricane Matthew. R-S Central will go to Kings Mountain on Friday, while Chase has a bye week.

East Rutherford had Shelby on the road and fell 45-7. However, they do welcome Draughn this Friday as the Cavaliers have a real good shot of ending a 5-game losing streak.

On the soccer field, the Chase boys continues to roll as they are 12-0 with six games left in the high school regular season. The biggest game comes on October 24 when the Trojans host Shelby. Thomas Jefferson is also showing well at 8-3-1, 6-2 at the moment.

NFL: For the moment, here is my top five teams from each conference.

Top 5 from the AFC: 1. New England 2. Denver 3. Buffalo 4.Pittsburgh 5. Oakland.

New England has done well without Tom Brady and on Sunday, they looked even better with him back on the field. Despite a tough defense, Denver can be beaten as Atlanta just did it. Buffalo has won three in a row against solid defenses, who would have thought after how they started the season?

Top 5 NFC: 1. Minnesota 2. Atlanta 3.Dallas 4. Philly 5. Green Bay.

Right now, the Vikings earn the right for number one considering their defense may be the best in the league right now and what Sam Bradford has done at QB. Atlanta's offense is explosive and their defense is starting to come around. Dallas is getting better every week. They look like contenders and not pretenders anymore.

NASCAR: Don't look now, but here comes Jimmie Johnson. Johnson was hit or miss most of the season, but he just won the Bank of America 500 from Charlotte. He now moves to the third round of "The Chase."

This coming week is Kansas and I will take Martin Truex Jr for the win. Truex should have won earlier this season at Kansas, but a bad final pit stop doomed his day. Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano and Matt Kenseth should be threats in this one.
