High School Heroes

High School Heroes is a program dedicated to expanding the college-going culture by providing college awareness activities in elementary school classrooms. Heroes talk to the students about college and careers and work with the students on classroom projects. High School Heroes are students from the Building Leaders high school program.

As part of this program, each high school works with their district's elementary schools and respective 3rd grade students to put on college fairs. Each high school works with one elementary school per semester, and parents, community members, and other students in the schools are encouraged to participate in the college fair and to see what the students have accomplished. To facilitate the college fair, students are put into groups according to their potential career interests. They are, then, given a college to research that offers degrees ih fields of interest. High school students act as mentors to the elementary school students as they develop a display board and memorize facts about their college.

The high school students in the photos are from RS Central, and the 3rd graders are from Rutherfordton Elementary.
