Horsehead Executives Hold Town Meeting... Hope To Have New Facility Up & Running On Or Before
September 2013

On Tuesday, August 7th, Horsehead Corporation sponsored a community event at Hicks Grove Baptist Church in Mooresboro. The church is adjacent to the new Horsehead Zinc Plant. A construction update was presented to all attendees in the Fellowship Hall of Hicks Grove Baptist. Community officials and local citizens were all invited to this first community meeting. All major executives of Horsehead Corporation came from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to avail themselves to an open floor and question and answer session. The meeting started with a brief presentation by Horsehead President and CEO James M. Hensler.

Great emphasis was placed on the fact that Horsehead is a green company. The new plant in Rutherford County is a definite state-of-the-art facility. Senior Vice President for Corporate Affairs, Ali Alavi stated that: “The new facility, the only one of its kind in North America, is very environmentally friendly. This, because the facility uses a solvent extraction - Electrowinning process which is a Hydrometallurgical process and not a Pyrometallurgical. This basically means it is a minor source for air emissions and will have a very small carbon footprint.” Environmentalists welcomed this good news.

At the meeting, Anthony Staley, PhD was introduced. He is the on site General Manager - Zinc Metal for Horsehead’s new plant, now under construction. He and his wife have already purchased a home in Rutherford County. He answered all questions and replied to all concerns from local citizens in attendance. He also took all those who wanted to go on a bus tour of the new plant. He explained what each part of the plant does and the process of zinc extraction. Horsehead extracts zinc metal from multiple recycled sources including Waelz Zinc Oxide.”

Unless ahead of schedule, the new Horsehead facility in Rutherford County is presently scheduled to begin operation in September of 2013. The positions needed for the facility do not require a college education. Salaries will range from $40,000 to $45,000. Employment opportunities will be announced at a later date.

The commitment of Horsehead is reflected in their planned periodic town hall meetings which will be an ongoing event up and until the plant begins operations. Their efforts to communicate and inform the citizens of the county is very evident. They came to listen and answer questions.

It is very obvious that Rutherford County is most fortunate to have been selected for Horsehead Corporations new site. Remember, we were the one chosen from over 100 potential locations. Does it get any better than this?
