I bet the gym will be packed at East Rutherford on Friday, December 20. It’s East Rutherford (4-1, 2-0) versus Shelby (5-1, 3-0) to see who can obtain the early SMAC standings lead on the boys side of the equation.

Despite East Rutherford leading at the end of eight of those quarters, Shelby won all four meetings last year.

The two teams have key players with Gabe Devoe (Clemson signee) of Shelby among them averaging 36 points and 12.6 rebounds per game so far this season. East Rutherford will have Devonte Boykins and Travis Waldroup-Rodriguez.

Both teams have key losses from their rosters a season ago, but still are among the best in 2A and the South Mountain Athletic Conference. And remember, the last eight meetings have been decided by less than seven points each time. I expect the East Rutherford (2-2,1-1) - Shelby girls game to be pretty good too.

Chase boys basketball earned a big win against Draughn last Friday and will host R-S Central on Friday (Dec.20).

R-S Central (5-3,1-2) guys split this past week, while both the Chase and Central girls were swept this past week. The boys at Thomas Jefferson (3-2) won two of three this past week knocking off Hendersonville and North Henderson.

The Carolina Panthers control their own destiny at this point. Win this weekend over New Orleans in Charlotte and they pick up the lead in the NFC South, gain the No.2 seed momentarily, plus clinch a playoff spot. If the Panthers lose, they have to beat Atlanta the following week or hope the Cardinals lose out.

Carolina can only fight for the two seed or the two wildcard spots, but would preferably like the two seed since that pits them at home after a first round bye.

New Orleans owned them two weeks ago, but St. Louis just showed all of the NFL how to play the Saints. I guarantee Riverboat Ron will be watching Rams-Saints video a lot this week.

Top 10 NFL teams with two weeks left in the regular season. 10) Miami 9) Chicago 8)Detroit 7)New England 6)San Francisco 5) Carolina 4)New Orleans 3)Kansas City 2) Denver 1)Seattle.

Although Philly and Indy are leading their divisions in the playoff races, I don’t believe that they are among the top ten teams. Philly was knocked out this week since they lost to a terrible Minnesota team without Adrian Peterson and a solid quarterback. Indy plays in the worse division in the league and carries on without their best receiver or a defense at all.

While am I am thinking about it, who would have thought two of the most popular teams in the NFL…Dallas and Washington would have struggled as badly as they have this season. Dallas should fire Coach Jason Garrett or Jerry Jones should fire himself and hire somebody else to run the team. Although, Tony Romo threw two huge interceptions in the final few minutes this past Sunday, it was the fact that Dallas didn‘t run the ball more with the lead to run the clock. Romo can blame himself more for Sunday‘s loss, but like most weeks, not all was his fault.

Instead, Green Bay comes back after being 23 down in the first half and wins with a backup QB. That scenario is inexcusable and the biggest reason Dallas lost is due to the fact that they have no defense whatsoever. They give up the most yards per game in the NFL and allowed 34 points in the second half alone to the Packers. The funniest part is that the Cowboys (7-7) still have a shot of making the playoffs. Win the next two weeks and they are no worse than a four seed.

Washington has basically given up, they don’t believe in each other and the only defense they have is mediocre at best against the run. All of the Redskins coaching staff should be fired and offensive line isn’t much better giving up four sacks a game.

And finally, Lenoir-Rhyne (13-1) will play for the NCAA Division II pigskin title on Saturday (Dec. 21) in Florence, Alabama. After beating West Chester 42-14, the Bears go to their first ever title game in DII football. Lenoir-Rhyne faces Northwest Missouri St (14-0). NWM St. has won four DII national titles and been in eight title games in Florence. Live coverage is at noon on ESPN2.
