James Daniel “Dan” Covington, 78, passed away Friday, October 24, 2014. 

He was the son of a late Vernon Beulah Webb Covington of Polkville. He was a graduate of Polkville High School and Howard Business College. He served 4 years in the U.S. Army with 3 years of service in Camp Oji, Japan. He was retired from Eaton Corporation and the Department of Corrections in Spindale. He was a member of the Hollis Masonic Lodge #535, the Hollis and Camp Call Chapters of The Order of the Eastern Star and was a longtime member of Hopewell United Methodist Church until its closing in November of 2012.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Gene Covington and wife Sue of Shelbyville, Indiana, his brother, Jack Covington of Shelby and his sister, Janet Covington Brooks and husband John of Fletcher, North Carolina. Surviving are his wife, Suzanne Covington of the home; one son, Jim Covington and wife Cathy of Ellenboro, and their daughter, Amanda and fiancée, Joe Vaughn of Conroe, Texas; one daughter, Lea Danner and husband Neil, and their son Cody, of Ellenboro. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Frances Covington of Shelby and his aunt, Catherine Spurling of Columbia, South Carolina.

Memorial services were held at The A.C. McKinney Memorial Chapel at McKinney-Landreth & Carroll Funeral and Cremation Service with the Reverend Ed Lee officiating. Interment of his ashes will be held in the Hopewell Community Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be made in Dan’s name to either The Grace of God Rescue Mission, 537 West Main Street, Forest City, NC 28043 or The Salvation Army Christmas Cheer Center, 417 Duke Street, Forest City, NC 28043.

McKinney-Landreth & Carroll Funeral and Cremation Service is serving the Covington family.
