James Kenneth (Ken) McFarland, age 69 of Forest City passed away Sunday, August 3, 2014. 

He was born November 20, 1944 in Rutherford County and was a son of the late Allison Kirby and Lois Padgett McFarland. Ken retired from Harris-Teeter Grocery Stores and following his retirement was an agent for Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society. He was a graduate of East Rutherford High School and Isothermal Community College, served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and was an active member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church. At Oak Grove he served on various church committees including President of the Methodist Men and Administrative Council Chairman. Ken was active in civic matters including the Forest City Lions Club where he was former President, held numerous offices including District office and Zone Chairman. A recipient of the “Lion of The Year Award” he was also a Melvin Jones Fellow.

Ken was also a 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of Hollis Lodge No. 535, a Shrinner and Scottish Rite Mason. He was a member of Woodmen of the World, American Legion, had served on the Board of Leadership Rutherford and was a graduate of Leadership Rutherford. Ken loved travel, his volunteer service and his work in the Forest City Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Tate McFarland of the home, a sister, Martha Jean White and husband Lawrence of Bostic, sister in law, Gayle Tate Bush of Jacksonville, FL, nieces, Sandy Bush, Julie Bush, Jennifer Bush, nephew, Rob Bush, and great-nephew, Brandon Bush all of Jacksonville, FL as well as the family cats, Alex, Nikita, and Grayby which brought him much joy.

A memorial service was held at Oak Grove United Methodist Church with Reverend David Hawkins officiating.
