Janice Ruth Fryauff Matthisen

Janice Ruth Fryauff Matthisen, age 83, passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2015.

She was born May 8th in Cleveland, Ohio to Joseph George and Dorothy Kubal Fryauff. She graduated from St. Lukes School of Nursing in Cleveland in 1953. She went to Baldwin Wallace College as a resident nurse where she was a liaison with returning veterans and met her future husband Norman. They were married April 16, 1954.

After moving to Forest City in 1961, Jan worked for Rutherford County Health Department, taught nursing at ICC, and retired from Cleveland County Health Department in 1998. She completed her BSN in 1983 at UNC-Charlotte.

Jan was active in bridge clubs and ballroom dancing for many years. She was a tireless volunteer with Girl Scouts, Hospice, Pilot Club, the County Child Protection Team, the County Child Mortality Team, and the McNair Foundation.

Survivors include her husband Norman; daughters Linda Walker (Freddie) of Seneca, SC, Kathy Harris (David) of Greensboro, Stacey Bates (Randy) of Alpharetta, Ga, and Amy Penson (Joel) of Bostic; 8 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents, brother Robert Fryauff, and infant son Scott.

Memorial services were held at Crowe's Funeral Chapel with Rev. Phil Dunford officiating. A celebration of Jan's life was held after the service. Memorial donations may be sent to the Rutherford Housing Partnership, 686 West Main Street, Forest City, NC 28043.

Crowe's Mortuary is assisting the family.
